Women and heart disease: Keeping active

Finding time for exercise isn't easy for people with busy schedules. But exercise doesn't have to mean hours at a time in the gym. Adding 30 minutes of activity to your day can have a positive effect on your blood pressure, weight, mood and energy level. If 30 minutes is hard to plan it's ok to break it up into 10-minute sessions to start. There are also ways to add a little movement to everything you do.

At work

  • Taking lunchtime walks at the office with a work friend
  • Stretching and using exercise bands at your desk
  • Parking at the far end of the lot to get extra steps in
  • Same thing with the bus; you can get off a stop or two early for some extra steps
  • Choosing the stairs over elevators and escalators

At home

  • Turning household chores into calorie burners by moving with purpose
  • Exercise time can be a great way to have fun with the kids. Put on some music and have a 30-minute dance party
  • If there's time, you can walk to meet the kids' bus instead of drive
